The EXAR OD-04 Overdrive is a distinctive and versatile distortion for guitar.

The distortion circuit uses progressive discrete gain stages to the soft clip the signal, generating subtle low-order harmonics.  The distortion is smooth and exceptionally responsive to picking dynamics, without the intermodulation and fizzy high-order harmonics generated by many other designs.

Its sensitivity to playing dynamics means that you can extend your range of expression just by varying your picking technique.  Play lightly for a beautiful, chimey clean tone, dig on for creamy distortion, or coax any variation in between out of it just by how you play.

For the same reason, it's equally sensitive to your guitar's pickups and control settings, so you can get anything from a juicy, harmonic-laden lead sound to a barely-breaking twang with just by tweaking the guitar's volume control.
